* Mystara has its own unique selection of creatures that exist in that world * Mystara has a unique cosmology with planes and star systems etc. * Immortals are not just gods with other names. The main criticism of the AD&D Mystara line is that it seemed intent on washing away the features that make Mystara into a unique setting and making it into as much of a generic D&D world as possible. Maybe one of the races listed in the OP is hidden away as a single line is one of the 2e products. Did any of them include references to monsters from the "generic" 2e Monstrous Compendiums? I'm taking that slightly out of context, but how about the 2nd Edition Mystara products. Havard wrote:Not found in BECMI, but much fan material include them so I might be inclined to do so as well. Heck, I'd even be willing to Mystararize Eberron races. I mix and match from almost any source available to me. Were the other two in one of the CCs?įYI. I noticed you only listed the Annis Hag and not the other two.

) I just wasn't sure if the Kuo-Toa and Locathah had a place in Mystara's seas as well. (I also have The Sea Peoples accessory, which I still haven't read. I knew about the Kna from the AD&D 2E MCA. I didn't know about the connection to Ochalea. I wondered about the Ogre Mages because of Myoshima. For the Fish-folk, I would go with Kna and other Mystara-specific undersea races. Ogre Mages have been connected to Ochalea, so I might make an exception there. Not saying they cannot be included, but if you want to capture the essential Mystaran atmosphere, then these races probably should not be the main focus. Heh.), but since none of these races exist in BECMI, they don't feel particularly Mystaran to me. (I seem to remember that they aren't standard Mystaran creatures)Ĭall me a purist (okay, you're a purist. Of course, this assumes that the two races aren't canonical for Mystara.

The githzerai could be either allies or enemies in such a campaign. I have this strange though of having the githyanki invade Mystara from elsewhere (similar to the Black Spine adventure for Dark Sun). And how do all the 'suitable' goblinoid races interact? * For goblinoids, I seem to remember that for Mystara orcs are considered the main type. What from this list would be canon for Mystara? What could be included that isn't canonical? What absolutely should not exist on Mystara?

(And since I forgot to list the derro in the other list, I've included it here. I know the answer for some of them, but I've included everything just for the sake of completeness. This thread asks the same question for the various classic monstrous races as noted in the D&D MM v.3.5. The results were a bit surprising, IMO, but informative.
#DND 5E MONSTROUS RACES MANUAL#
In the Mystara's Underdark? thread, I posed a question regarding which of the Underdark creatures from the D&D Monster Manual v.3.5 would be suitable for a Mystara campaign.
